I don’t worry any longer about them grabbing the controls these days lol. I engineered the autonomous apparatus to simulate autonomy and reward the courage it takes to confidently press buttons in front of everyone. They don’t work. But please spend your energy here.

The Spolsky reference unlocks something I keep running into in engineering orgs: every "abstraction is leaking" moment is really a governance moment. Once leadership can see the sausage being made, someone always wants to grab a piece... and the cost isn't the leak itself, it's the reflexive hardening that follows.

The teams that come out ahead aren't necessarily the ones with the cleanest abstractions, they're the ones who treat abstraction maintenance as a first-class discipline instead of a tax. Loved the framing.

Time to go hire some plumbers.
