What this piece doesn't say explicitly but shows clearly: the best defense startups aren't just technology companies. They're political companies that happen to build technology. SBIR gets you in the room. Congressional relationships keep you funded. Most founders only prepare for one of those.

If there’s ever a follow up to this, it’d be great to see a case study of a young startup that got started this way.

A timeline from ideation to first money in the bank. Who were the founders? What was the product? How much needed to be shown before a contract was agreed upon? Did they need warm introductions?
