"Durham, NC (maybe the greatest American city outside of New York)."

C'mon now, we all know that's Chapel Hill.

that one's so on point: "kids have the agency, curiosity, and support to pursue Whatever They Wish"

thanks for the 'parents' perspective. there are great things in there.

it defo makes me want to invite you (with your kids obviously) to the next NewKid event in SF on Oct.25: https://luma.com/snoi9y9g?tk=OTQHIL

I've been sitting here pondering what to comment since one of my young adult children chose the 'traditional' college path, and one did not - and I've spoken with other parents of like-aged children who have experienced the same. It certainly took time, as a fellow Blue Devil, to adjust to a child of mine who had different expectations of where life could lead. What I'm most proud of as a parent is that my children have discovered their interests and have had the fortitude to pursue them.

To me, this is success.

This is more like the future of brainwashing kids

The future of education is not going to be led by you.

I have a 10yrs that codes in java script and python. She is good at LLM and writing prompts also. She goes off to secondary school and i cant find a school to matches her skill. I am crying for my child right now because i dont know how to help her

The secondary schools wont help her and i feel like a failure

This is a fabulous essay. I may even go as far as calling it a manifesto for parenthood.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I think it’s true that college needs a revamp and there’s a place for programs like this…though I think they’ll stay a small part of higher education. I don’t think you can recreate the social aspect of college without, well, college. I think AH might overestimate the appeal of their worldview as well. Sure, some kids in tech will see the value of their network - but they’re pretty severely disliked across the vast majority of anyone who has heard of them, young adults included from my experience. My gut is they realize running an education business sucks and it’s gone in 7 years, but more alternatives will pop up and find small success for their niches.

OMG, Durham, NC is the greatest . . . . anything?

You need to get out more, son. Couldn't trust the judgement of anybody who holds such a stilted view of Duke and that place. Hook 'em, Heels!

You will never really understand children and how to raise them until you are on the other side of the process and your own children have children.

My kids are 40-ish and their kids -- 4 granddaughters -- are 8 - 1/4.

There are no rules that can be universally applied but one -- the parents have to be and stay in charge. Life is not a buffet. You have to exert guidelines.

When your kids are firmly on the right path and have their own kids, they will come to you and say, "You know, Dad, I used to think you were sort of an ogre, but you were right."

You can't suddenly decide you want to be a maker when you're 20. You have to start when you're younger. You have to do physical things and acquire simple skills -- I worked construction and walked away with carpentry, cement finishing, and brickwork. I became a civil engineer and really built big things.

It is useful to attach skills to privileges -- want to drive a car? Learn to change a tire and the oil, keep it clean and do other routine maintenance.

There are a million different paths to the finish line, but the one your kids will follow eventually after trying several, will be the one they choose, not the one you manipulate them to follow.

Cheers.

As a freshman in high school myself, I couldn't agree more. Excited to apply for HAA as soon as I graduate!
