“The West needs to be prepared for wars against countries such as Russia and China”

Fuck you.

All of our families, histories, economic and cultural lives are intermingled and have been for centuries; we shake each others hands, conduct trade and peace summits with each other, trade and manufacture each other’s medicines, chips, baby toys; we pursue and share science together, exchange our students, hire each other in our companies, read and celebrate each other’s literature…

Now suddenly we’re out of ideas, out of common sense and creative leadership, and feeling so shaky about the free market, and so fearful of simply acknowledging and apologizing to the enemies we’ve created for ourselves, that we urgently must * invest more *to save us from the people we are literally trading with and cooperating with on many fronts today.

In America, do we have leaders and a public today who actually believe and practice the principles of western enlightenment, ethics, and peace and stability through trade, compromise and cultural and historical respect?

Or are we doubling down on low resolution thinking, delusions of religious supremacy, the re-manufacturing of unnecessary enemies, and the wasting trillions of dollars of resources and human-capital and critical environmental damage - all toward the kind of war that no one would win, or an obsolete “peace through strength” axiom that doesn’t apply to a theater like this.

What we need is soul searching and a moral compass at a16z.

The few who control capital, technology, and the channels through which information spreads can not only decide where society’s resources go, but also have an outsized say in defining what counts as justified. This is just sad
